Running Pace Calculator
Work out your pace and speed from distance and time.
How to calculate running pace
Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance: total time ÷ distance. It is shown as minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile. Speed is the opposite view: distance ÷ time in hours. One mile equals 1.609344 kilometers.
Worked examples
- 5 km in 28:30: 1,710 seconds ÷ 5 = 342 seconds, a pace of 5:42 per km. That is about 9:10 per mile, or 10.53 km/h (6.54 mph).
- 10 km in 50:00: a pace of 5:00 per km, about 8:03 per mile, and a speed of 12 km/h.
Finish times at a steady pace
| Pace per km | 5K | 10K | Half marathon | Marathon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5:00 | 25:00 | 50:00 | 1:45:29 | 3:30:59 |
| 6:00 | 30:00 | 1:00:00 | 2:06:35 | 4:13:10 |
| 7:00 | 35:00 | 1:10:00 | 2:27:41 | 4:55:22 |
A 5K is 5 km (3.11 miles), a 10K is 6.21 miles, a half marathon is 21.0975 km (13.11 miles) and a marathon is 42.195 km (26.22 miles).
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
Multiply the pace per km by 1.609344. A 5:00 per km pace becomes about 8:03 per mile.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on your fitness, age, terrain and goals. A pace that lets you hold a conversation is comfortable for many beginners. Progress gradually, and ask a doctor first if you are new to exercise or have health concerns.
Why is my real race time different from the table?
The table assumes a perfectly steady pace. Hills, weather, fatigue and starting too fast usually change real results, especially in longer races.
Can I use this for walking or cycling?
Yes. It works for any activity where you know the distance and time. Pace and speed are calculated the same way.
