Tip Calculator
Work out the tip, the total bill and each share when splitting.
How to calculate a tip
- Tip = bill × tip percent ÷ 100
- Total = bill + tip
- Each person's share = total ÷ number of people
Quick mental math: 10% of the bill is the bill with the decimal point moved one place to the left. Double that for 20%, or add half of it for 15%.
Worked example
A restaurant bill is $80 and you want to leave an 18% tip, split between 2 people.
- Tip: $80 × 0.18 = $14.40
- Total: $80 + $14.40 = $94.40
- Each person pays: $94.40 ÷ 2 = $47.20
Tip amounts for a $50 bill
| Tip | Amount | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | $7.50 | $57.50 |
| 18% | $9.00 | $59.00 |
| 20% | $10.00 | $60.00 |
| 25% | $12.50 | $62.50 |
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is common at sit-down restaurants with table service. Customs differ by country and by type of service, so check local norms when you travel.
Should I tip on the total with tax or before tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, and others tip on the total. Either is acceptable. Enter the amount you prefer to base the tip on.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. If the bill already includes a service charge or an automatic gratuity, check whether it goes to the staff before adding more.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does that for you and shows each person's share.
Tipping customs vary. This calculator is a convenience and not a rule.
