Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate the fuel needed and the cost of a trip from distance and fuel economy.
Trip fuel cost
-How fuel cost is calculated
- US units: fuel needed (gallons) = distance in miles ÷ miles per gallon.
- Metric units: fuel needed (liters) = distance in km × liters per 100 km ÷ 100.
- Cost = fuel needed × fuel price.
Worked examples
- 300 miles at 30 mpg and $3.50 a gallon: 10 gallons, $35.00, about $0.117 a mile. As a round trip (600 miles) it is $70.00.
- 500 km at 7 L/100 km and 1.50 a liter: 35 liters, 52.50, or 0.105 per km.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert mpg to liters per 100 km?
Divide 235.215 by the mpg figure. For example, 30 mpg is about 7.84 L/100 km. The same formula works in reverse.
Why is my real fuel cost different?
Real fuel economy changes with speed, traffic, terrain, load, weather and driving style. Use the figure from your own recent fill-ups for the best estimate.
Does this include tolls, parking or wear?
No. It covers fuel only. Tolls, parking, maintenance and wear on the vehicle are extra.
Can I use another currency?
Yes. In metric mode the result is shown without a currency symbol, so use any currency for the fuel price.
