How hours worked are calculated

The calculator subtracts the start time from the end time, then removes the unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it treats the shift as overnight and adds 24 hours. The total is shown in hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which payroll systems usually need.

Worked examples

Minutes as decimal hours

Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 and 45 minutes is 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract the unpaid break. Enter the break in minutes and the calculator does it for you.

Does this handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it counts the hours past midnight.

Does this include overtime?

No. Overtime rules vary by country, state and employer. Work out regular and overtime hours separately and apply the right rate to each.

How do I add up hours for a whole week?

Enter the shift and the number of days worked, or add each day with the time calculator.
